ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT
How is wrinkle treatment carried out?
A protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum is used to treat wrinkles. This protein has been used successfully in medicine for over forty years. It was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) as a drug for the treatment of strabismus as early as 1973.
Since the early 1990s, it has also been used in aesthetic medicine. Initially used in so-called off-label use, it has been officially approved for the treatment of frown lines since 2002.
The treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis in the practice. The muscle relaxant is injected in minimal amounts directly into the target muscle using a very fine needle. The full effect is apparent after three to five days and usually lasts four to six months. Regular repetitions can achieve a long-term effect that extends the duration of the effect to up to one year.
One active ingredient - different preparations
Various preparations with the same active ingredient are available for wrinkle treatment
The bacterial protein used to treat wrinkles is available in various preparations and has been used successfully in medicine for decades. It is approved by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices for various therapeutic applications. In addition to aesthetic applications, it is used in the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and muscle spasms in the area of the eyes and forehead (blepharoplasty).
The substance is injected directly into the target muscle, where it reduces the increased muscle activity by specifically and temporarily blocking the nerve impulses. The muscle relaxes, which makes the overlying skin smoother: wrinkles are reduced or disappear, and the formation of new wrinkles is prevented. Other nerve functions, such as feeling or touch, remain unaffected. Although the method is considered safe, correct application is crucial for optimal results.
