Inverted nipples are usually a congenital malformation in which the milk duct system is shortened. This is generally not pathological, and the ability to breastfeed is usually maintained despite inverted nipples. The desire for correction therefore has predominantly aesthetic reasons.

Small incisions at the base of the nipple are used to cut the milk ducts and permanently raise the nipple. Scars are usually not visible, but there may be a change in sensitivity.
