GYNECOMASTIA
The enlarged manbreast
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the male breast gland, which can occur on one or both sides and often causes significant distress for those affected.
True gynecomastia is typically caused by hormonal imbalances or medication, with serious underlying health conditions being a rare cause. However, it’s important to identify the cause through thorough evaluation.
Many men who experience this condition struggle with the physical and emotional impact, often choosing loose clothing, avoiding situations where they might need to be shirtless (such as swimming), and even altering their posture to conceal the change. These challenges often lead them to seek guidance on how to reduce the size of their male breasts.
In addition to true gynecomastia Pseudogynecomastia (lipomastia) is much more common and is a pure increase in fatty tissue in the breast area. Pseudogynecomastia occurs primarily in connection with obesity.
Gynecomastia also often occurs in newborns or during puberty. This does not initially require surgery, as it is usually caused by non-pathological hormonal changes and resolves on its own. Nevertheless, it is still advisable to investigate the cause.
