BREAST CONSTRUCTION

If a modified radical mastectomy (complete removal of the mammary gland), a skin-sparing mastectomy (removal of the glandular tissue while leaving the skin and nipple) or the removal of large parts of the breast had to be performed for oncological reasons, we, as a cooperation partner of the Breast Center at the DRK Clinics Westend, would be happy to discuss with you the possibility of reconstructing the breast, including reconstructing the nipple and pigmenting the areola. This process therefore always involves several steps and can be carried out as an immediate or interval reconstruction. The course of the disease is not affected by this.

The information on breast reconstruction can of course only be very general at this point. In a confidential conversation, we can explain the various procedures to you in detail and, together with you and the colleagues at the breast center, select the best procedure for you. For further preliminary information, we recommend the page www.mammarekonstruktion.de .

With immediate reconstruction, reconstruction takes place at the same time as the diseased breast is removed, i.e. in one operation.

In interval reconstruction, reconstruction takes place after completion of oncological therapy. If radiation of the chest wall had to be carried out as part of adjuvant (supportive) therapy, at least 6 to 8 months should be waited after completion of radiation.

For many patients, it is initially not possible for psychological reasons to decide on immediate reconstruction during the planning of primary therapy. In this case, it may be better to carry out the reconstruction later (interval reconstruction). In the meantime, patients can obtain detailed information about the surgical procedures under consideration.
There are various procedures that can be used to reconstruct the breast, for example:

  • with an implant
  • with an implant together with the body's own tissue (latissimus dorsi muscle)
  • or exclusively with the body's own tissue, which is obtained from the abdomen (TRAM flap, DIEP flap, or SIEA flap), from the buttocks (FCI flap, I-GAP flap or S-GAP flap) or from the thigh (TMG flap).
